“The Christian of the next Reformation will be a mystic.”
Fr. Richard Rohr
“I am contending for you that your hearts will be wrapped in the comfort of heaven and woven together into love’s fabric. This will give you access to all the riches of God as you experience the revelation of God’s great mystery—Christ. For our spiritual wealth is in him, like hidden treasure waiting to be discovered—heaven’s wisdom and endless riches of revelation knowledge.”
The Apostle Paul – Colossians 2:2-3 The Passion Translation
The Christian Mystic
A Christian Mystic is someone who experiences union with God. You have been embraced and wrapped up in the mystery that is Christ Himself. Thanks to Jesus, we can, right now, enjoy rich and deep friendship with God!
“So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God.”
Romans 5:11 NLT
Author Fr. Richard Rohr simply defines the mystic as the experiential knowledge of God. Since this is also exactly how Jesus defines eternal life, then wouldn’t it be safe to say that anyone who belongs to Jesus Christ is a Christian mystic?
“Eternal life means to know and experience you as the only true God, and to know and experience Jesus Christ, as the Son whom you have sent.”
Jesus (John 17:3)
Yes, it seems that every single born again believer in the kingdom of God is a Christian mystic. Because as Jesus defined it, eternal life is not something we receive when we die, eternal life is Someone we receive now. Someone with whom we are in relationship. It is interesting to note that Jesus is even defined by Scripture as eternal life! We enjoy the One who is eternal life when we receive the free gift of restored relationship with Jesus.
“And we know that the Son of God has made our understanding come alive so that we can know by experience the One who is true. And we are in him who is true, God’s Son, Jesus Christ—the true God and eternal life!”
1 John 5:20 TPT
Jesus says “my sheep hear my voice” so it stands to reason that if you are part of his metaphorical flock, you too have had that mystical experience of hearing God’s voice.
“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. “My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. “I and the Father are one.”
Jesus (John 10:27-30 NASB)
And as Ryan Kibbe, pastor of Elevation church often says, “You hear God better than you think you do.”

Yes there may be abuses or foolishness happening in the name of “Christian Mysticism”. The word mystic or mysticism isn’t the problem. We need not fear this very Christian word. Jesus used the word “mystery” or “secret” (Greek: Mysterion) to describe the Kingdom of God and the Apostle Paul was very fond of using the word. The Greek word mysterion means “hidden thing, a secret, an enigma.”
